Safety Light Curtains are opto-electronic sensing safety devices that detect the presence of an object in the light curtain's sensing field. They are commonly used in machine guarding applications to detect the presence of a person's finger, hand, limb or whole body.
So, if your production process requires active intervention by personnel, the new Pilz PSENopt II light curtains can provide an optimum and cost effective solution for plant and machinery safety requirements. Depending on the application, the Pilz light curtains satisfies all the requirements of EN/IEC 61496-1 for finger, hand or body protection.
Pilz now offers a comprehensive range of light curtains ranging from cost effective versions all the way to highly robust curtains with advanced functions such as muting, blanking or cascading. The company can now provide light curtains to suit a wide variety of applications.
These new second generation safety light curtains come in a standard Type 4 and a ‘world first’ Type 3 light curtain. The new Type 3 light curtain works in with the revised version of IEC 61496-1, with PSENopt II it is no longer necessary to switch to type 4 when PL d is required.
Protection against shock
These new light curtains from Pilz are particularly suited for manual workplaces, such as those with materials handling and/or robotic applications. With their high shock resistance of 50g, they are ideally suited for rugged industrial environments. PSENopt II not only offer increased flexibility with a focus on their application area, but also increase machine availability.

PSENopt II offers hand protection and finger protection up to Category 4, PL e & SIL 3. The light curtains work with continuous single beams that completely eliminate so-called "dead zones". The light barriers are able to be positioned closer to the application and thanks to the absence of dead zones, users can save valuable space.
Protect quickly and economically
PSENopt II light curtains can be applied flexibly and installed easily with the assembly aids. Due to their 5-pin connection they can be directly connected to the decentralised periphery PDP67. This effectively reduces the commissioning effort. In combination with control technology from Pilz, PSENopt II light curtains are a safe, economical and complete solution for a huge range of industries and applications.
The multi-functionality of the PSENopt advanced light curtains enable muting, blanking and/or cascading using just one light curtain. These functions open up a wide range of possibilities for the integration of light curtains into the workspace.
Use muting to distinguish between a person and material, and transport material into and out of a danger zone. Muting is a safe, automatic and a temporary suspension of a protection device.
The blanking function makes simple machine designs possible. Your production process can be flexible and adaptable to different production materials as the blanking function can be quickly and easily implemented
Use the Cascading function for effective protection against encroachment into and behind the protected area. In this way, adjacent protected fields can be easily safeguarded. This type of cascading enables the front, top and back of a machine to be safeguarded using just one single light curtain system.
For applications where space is at a premium and on doors and gates PSENopt slim light barriers are ideal and they also enable effective protection against encroachment into and behind the protected area thanks to their cascading function.
Pilz supplies all the cables, protective housings (IP69K) and attachments (such as deflecting mirrors) needed to install a light curtain effectively.
